Twice a year Microsoft publishes its release notes for the Power Platform. And this week the notes for April 2020 – September 2020 were released. My friend and colleague Daniel Laskewitz published a very nice overview of these on LinkedIn.

As I’m very interested in the governance and admin side of things, I wanted to take a look at these as-well.

Want to take a look yourself? Here’s the link to the published roadmap.

Some features have been around for some time, albeit in public preview. Admin connectors and PowerShell cmdlets enable your admins to automate certain tasks and to take advantage of the platform itself to manage it.

I do like the new ability to receive usage and adoption statistics for the apps (Bring your lake). This will be a feature which is highly appreciated. The Power Platform Advisor, which will become available without any preview, will allow admins and makers to solve (or troubleshoot) issues with co-called self-help solutions. Hmmmm. I’m very interested in the working of this…..

One of the more prominent items on the list (for me) is the lifecycle support for environments. I’m looking forward at trying the backup/restore of an environment. From time to time I do get some questions on this from customers. And being able to copy an environment will allow for (more easy) DTAP scenario’s. Great stuff! Wondering about the licensing though 🙂

The user access diagnostics should allow better support for the citizen developer. Error details and context, error reporting and more troubleshooting abilities to support your admins.

For the Office 365 people out there, the concept of “Targetted release” [or being able to use new or upcoming features before these come widely available] is not new and widely used. The Power Platform will now introduce the “Early access update”. Which is basically the same and a great feature. As admin you can now try out new features in a non-production environment.
